Hormone Replacement Therapy: What to Know Before Your Evaluation

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is treatment that provides hormones to help relieve symptoms related to changing hormone levels, most often discussed for the menopausal transition. It is not an anti-aging treatment and it is not for everyone: whether HRT is appropriate depends on a clinical evaluation of your symptoms, history, and risk factors.

What symptoms might lead to an HRT conversation?

Women commonly seek an evaluation for hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, or changes in mood during the menopausal transition. These symptoms can be significant, but they can also have other causes. A clinical evaluation sorts out what is going on before any treatment is considered.

What is bioidentical HRT, and what does non-pellet mean?

Bioidentical hormones are structurally similar to hormones produced by the body. TruHealth offers bioidentical HRT through a non-pellet approach, meaning hormones are not implanted as pellets. Importantly, bioidentical does not automatically mean safer or more effective than other options; your provider will review the evidence with you.

What are the risks and benefits to discuss?

HRT has potential benefits for symptom relief and real risks that vary by person, including considerations related to heart health, blood clots, and certain cancers. Age, health history, and the type and duration of therapy all matter. The evaluation exists to weigh these factors for you specifically.

What does shared decision-making look like?

Shared decision-making means you understand the options, the evidence, the alternatives, and the uncertainties, and your choice reflects your values and your health. Nothing is automatic. If HRT is not appropriate, your provider will say so and discuss alternatives.

How is HRT monitored over time?

If HRT is started, follow-up visits review how you are feeling, watch for side effects, and reassess whether treatment should continue, change, or stop. Monitoring is part of responsible hormone care, not an afterthought.
